Why walking is the best habit on your medication journey

People love to complicate exercise. You start a new medication and suddenly your social media feed is full of intense workout plans and heavy kettlebells. It feels entirely overwhelming. The truth is much simpler. You just need to put one foot in front of the other. Walking is completely underrated as a tool for women navigating this medication journey.

Why basic movement works

Your body is going through a lot right now. The medication changes how you digest food and how your energy levels fluctuate throughout the week. Adding an exhausting bootcamp into the mix usually just leaves you sore and defeated. Walking respects exactly where your body is today.

It gets your heart rate up without destroying your joints. You can do it in your normal clothes. It requires zero subscription fees. You don't need to buy any special gear or learn complicated routines to get started. Just step out of the front door.

Helping your digestion along

These medications slow down how quickly your stomach empties. That's exactly what they are meant to do. But sometimes that leaves you feeling uncomfortably full or a bit sluggish after eating a meal.

A gentle ten minute stroll after dinner makes a massive difference. Moving your legs helps move everything else along in your digestive system. It's a very practical way to manage that heavy feeling without needing to call your clinic for extra advice. Just a bit of fresh air and some steady steps can settle your stomach beautifully.

Getting out of your own way

Changing your daily routines is mentally exhausting. You spend half the day thinking about what you are eating, when you're eating and how you actually feel. It's a lot of mental load to process.

Getting outside changes the scenery entirely. The fresh air and the steady rhythm of your footsteps give your brain a badly needed break from overthinking. Sometimes the biggest benefit of a daily walk has absolutely nothing to do with your legs. It's simply about giving yourself permission to step away from your responsibilities for a few minutes.

How to build the habit

Don't try to walk ten thousand steps tomorrow. That's a completely arbitrary number anyway. If you currently only walk to the car and back, setting a massive goal will just make you feel like you're falling short.

Start with five minutes. Put your trainers on and walk to the end of your street. That's it. Consistency matters infinitely more than distance when you're building a new routine.

  • Leave your trainers by the front door where you can literally trip over them.
  • Pair your walk with a podcast or an audiobook you only allow yourself to listen to outside.
  • Walk for ten minutes immediately after your biggest meal of the day.
  • Add one extra block to your route only when your current walk starts feeling too easy.

When the weather is awful

Let's be honest about the British climate. Some days it's pouring with rain and freezing cold. Going outside feels absolutely miserable.

You don't have to march through a storm just to tick a box. Walk up and down your hallway while you're on a phone call with a friend. Put some music on and pace around the living room while the kettle boils for your tea. Any movement counts towards your daily total. The goal is simply to keep your body moving in a way that feels achievable.
