Simple bodyweight strength training at home

Lifting weights can feel like a whole new language. You walk into a gym and see machines with pulleys, heavy metal discs, and people grunting in the mirror. It is enough to make anyone turn around and go straight back to the treadmill. But keeping your muscles strong while taking medications like Wegovy or Mounjaro is incredibly helpful. Your body needs muscle to move easily and feel sturdy. The good news is that you do not need a single piece of equipment to start. Your own body weight is heavy enough.

The sit and stand

This sounds basic because it is. Find a sturdy dining chair and sit on the edge. Plant your feet flat on the floor, slightly wider than your hips. Now stand up.

Try not to use your hands to push off your knees or the armrests. Push down through your heels and squeeze your bottom as you rise. Then slowly sit back down. Control the descent rather than just dropping into the seat.

  • Aim for ten repetitions before taking a little breather.
  • Try to complete two rounds if you are feeling up to it today.

Pushing away from the wall

Getting down on the floor for a traditional pushup is tough. Sometimes getting back up is even harder. Using a wall takes away a lot of that pressure while still working your chest and arms.

Stand facing a blank wall, about an arm length away. Place your hands flat against the plaster at shoulder height. Slowly bend your elbows so your nose moves toward the wall. Then push yourself back to the starting position.

  • Keep your back straight like a plank of wood.
  • Adjust your difficulty by stepping closer to the wall to make it easier, or stepping further away to make it harder.

Waking up your legs

We spend a lot of time sitting. That makes the big muscles in our hips and thighs a bit lazy over time. This movement wakes them back up and helps support your lower back.

Lie on your back on a comfortable rug or yoga mat. Bend your knees so your feet are flat on the floor near your bottom. Press your heels firmly into the ground and lift your hips up towards the ceiling. Hold it at the top for a second, then lower back down gently.

  • Keep your shoulders relaxed on the floor.
  • Stop lifting when your body forms a straight line from your knees to your shoulders, taking care not to overarch your back.

Strengthening your ankles

Balance is something we lose if we do not practice it. Strong ankles and calves keep you steady on uneven pavements or when carrying heavy shopping bags.

Stand facing your kitchen counter. Hold onto the edge lightly with your fingertips for support. Rise up onto your tiptoes as high as you comfortably can. Pause for a heartbeat at the top. Slowly lower your heels back to the kitchen floor.

  • Use two feet at first to build confidence.
  • Only use the counter for balance, not to physically pull your body up.

Finding the time

You do not need to carve out a full hour to do these movements. In fact, thinking you need an entire uninterrupted hour is usually why workouts never happen.

Try linking one exercise to something you already do every day. Do your wall pushups while waiting for the kettle to boil. Do the sit and stand exercise before you settle onto the sofa to watch television. Consistency matters much more than intensity.
