Protein on a GLP-1: hitting your target with a smaller appetite
Practical, gentle ways to get enough protein while on a GLP-1 medication — meal shapes, easy swaps and what to do on low-appetite days.

Protein supports muscle, strength and steady energy. On a GLP-1, the challenge is not motivation — it is capacity. Smaller meals mean every plate has to work a little harder.
Start the plate with protein
If your appetite fades halfway through a meal, the order you eat in matters. Protein first means the part your body needs most is the part you actually finish.
- Eggs, Greek yoghurt or cottage cheese at breakfast.
- Fish, chicken, tofu or pulses at lunch and dinner.
- Vegetables and carbohydrates around the protein, not instead of it.
Make small meals count
Four small protein-led meals often work better than three larger ones you cannot finish. Splitting a meal in two and eating the second half an hour later is a perfectly good strategy.
Low-appetite days
Some days food is simply unappealing. On those days, drinkable and soft options are easier to manage than a full plate — and far better than nothing at all.
- A yoghurt or milk-based smoothie.
- Soup with pulses, chicken or tofu blended in.
- Cheese, eggs or a small portion of fish.
Pair protein with strength work
Protein protects muscle best when muscle is being used. Two short strength sessions a week — bodyweight, bands or light dumbbells — make the protein you eat far more valuable.
